The oldest method for catching deep-water fish is a hook on a line. Here an old salt in a sou'wester, employs his brute strength to hand line a big cod over the railing of a boat. He braces his feet against the gunnels amid a wash of green water. The Gloucester fisheries have had a time honored tradition of fishing Georges bank and the waters off New England from the days of sail power to modern times.  This is a hardy stalwart sailor-fisherman who embodies the brave men that go to the sea in ships. The detailing of his gnarled hands and the sneer on his face betray the commitment to task and courage necessary for such a tough occupation. The line dramtically shifts into form as it wraps around him and disspapears into the stone. On display and available at the Gallery at Firehouse Square, New London CT.
